We welcome you to launch your own equipment on the reservoir in a controlled and safe environment. Watersports activities come with an inherent risk. The safety of all water users will always be our priority.

Paddling In Nature

Regular monitoring shows that the water quality is excellent at Llanishen Reservoir.

You may come across a wide range of wildlife whilst out on the water. From the fish, water birds and the insects you can see, to the microbes and other organisms you can’t, the reservoir is home to them all.

Some of the organisms in the lake may cause you to have mild skin irritations like ‘swimmer’s itch’.

What is swimmer’s itch?

Swimmer’s itch, also called cercarial dermatitis, appears as a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to certain microscopic parasites that infect some birds and mammals. These parasites are released from infected snails into fresh and salt water (such as lakes, ponds, and oceans). Swimmer’s itch is found throughout the world and is more frequent during summer months.

Why doesn’t everyone suffer?

It seems that some people are more susceptible than others to getting affected. A little like mosquitoes who seem to go after certain people.

What are the signs and symptoms of swimmer’s itch?

Tingling, burning, or itching of the skin

Small reddish pimples or small blisters

Although uncomfortable, the itching generally lasts no more than a couple of days. You can’t spread the rash to other people, and it doesn’t need treatment. Using antihistamines, anti-itch creams, calamine lotion or bathing in Epsom salts can help.

What can be done to reduce the risk of swimmer’s itch?

Wear a full wetsuit

Take a warm shower with soap immediately after exiting the water, and rigorously towel dry.

Safety

The launching of inflatables and beach toys is strictly prohibited. If you feel that your craft is sufficiently robust to be exempt from this classification please contact us.

All self-launch sessions must be pre-booked.

You must check-in and collect a wrist band before launching your craft.

There will be a ‘control boat’ on the water during all sessions.

If you require assistance, stay with your craft and signal a member of the water safety team.

In the event of severe weather or other incidents, we have the right to Red Flag the water and suspend all water activities.

Last launch is one hour before the end of the session. Welsh Water reserve the right to end, alter or restrict any and all sessions at any time in order to maintain the safe management of the site and its participants.
